I put salt in my 500 fps pellet gun. It powders the salt.
I imagine anything coming out of that shotgun will lose all power within 20 feet.

Yup, it definitely won't have much range, and won't stop a determined attacker even at close range. The loud bang is just as much deterrent as the actual salt. It is a non-lethal round because of this, and you shouldn't get charged with attempted murder for using it. I still wouldn't admit to using it in this legal climate. If someone is charging quick or has a weapon cycle the salt round out and make the first shot buck shot.
If you think they'll be carrying plywood shields like the antifa do, put a slug or two in with the mix.

I'd get one of those animal deterrent less than lethal rounds. At least then they know you're aiming at them and not totally incompetent.
