Get to know your neighbors. Figure out which ones have teeth and claws. Which ones you can at least rely on as a lookout.
Establish your perimeter mentally and mark it off physically. Warning shots for breaching the front yard. Anyone who climbs this fence, dies. Anyone seen with a lit molotov, dies.
Make agreements now, that no one gets hauled off for re-education. That you will take action for each other, if one of you is arrested on trumped up political charges like in Soviet Russia

Now I'm picturing a mob outside your house, and one of them is lighting up a molotov. So you shoot him in the chest, through the molotov, and sending him in flames.

In every state that I know of, there is no such thing as a warning shot as far as the law is concerned. Additionally, any shot fired into the air will come down somewhere. I have a friend who had a bullet drop into his patio on the night of July 4th less than a month ago. You are far better off walking out with a shotgun with no round chambered. Cambering the first round should be warning enough. If you really want to give warning, make the first round salt shot and all the rest buck shot. Don't expect the salt shot to actually stop someone like in the movies, but it's one hell of a warning. If the intruder has a weapon just cycle the salt round and make the first shot buck shot.
Also, in most states a person has the right to walk up to your front door even if you have "no trespassing" marked all around your property. They can even walk up to the front door if they had to open and unlocked gate to the front yard. In some states a tenant can't even permanently kick someone off the property. Only a land owner can. A tenant can forcefully make someone leave, but a "legitimate" solicitor can come back after a while as long as they are going to other houses.
I'm not saying any of this bullshit is moral, but beware of your local laws. Whitey still get prosecuted for defending themselves everywhere even if others are attacking. People like to say things to the cops like "I gave them a warning shot." Definitely don't do that. You've just admitted to at least one felony in most states.
Do whatever you have to do to protect yourself, your family, and you friends. Just don't think the law will be on your side even if you made every possible attempt to deescalate the situation.

I put salt in my 500 fps pellet gun. It powders the salt.
I imagine anything coming out of that shotgun will lose all power within 20 feet.

Not too late. Unless you’re in an urban setting then they are probably trash.
