One idea I heard was that the nogs having a drug war right now are using the fireworks to confuse the "shots fired" audio detectors that are installed around the city.

Surely the audio detectors would be advanced enough to be able to tell the difference between a gun shot and airburst-style fireworks.

The same physics that make the sound of a gun when fired make the sound of fireworks when exploded, supersonic changes in localized air pressure.

u/empire_of_the_mind's explanation is probably correct. The reason why they're doing it is likely to desensitize authorities to the system's reporting.

Nahh, they're not. Sure there are some that are, but I think acoustics in cities may be a bit more complex for the machine. Spotshotters I think is one brand
