I only halfway believe. As a hot pepper grower, have never experienced that, and have had enough to feel agony and wish for death on more than one occasion. (trinidad chocolate scorpion) Maybe some people are just predisposed to that?

I think it is related to the 'flora and fauna' in your stomach and intestines. The wrong bacteria or lack of the right bacteria and the capsaicin doesn't get digested.

I'm growing those right now. Literally a paper thin sliver and I thought I was going to die. Hottest I've ever eaten. I'm keeping the plant away from the kids too.
