The caganer is a particular and highly popular feature of modern Catalan nativity scenes. It is believed to have entered the nativity scene by the late 17th or early 18th century, during the Baroque period

What the fuck is wrong with catalonians?

I blame the Jews. Specifically, the Conversos. Jews and all things scatological go hand-in-hand.

It can also be found in other parts of southwestern Europe, including Murcia, the region just south of the Valencia in Spain (where they are called cagones), Naples (cacone or pastore che caca) and Portugal (cagões).[5]

Were there heavy concentration of jews in these areas during the 17th - 18th centuries?

Now that I've read the rest of it I think it's kinda funny. Kids play "find the caganer" because the figure is usually well hidden, and it often depicts a celebrity or politician. Oh and there were protests when Barcelona unveiled a nativity scene without one.
