Need a web expert to weigh in...

Isn't their claim of monitoring the dark web for your social essentially bullshit? Wouldn't they have to first, be searching through the dark web for random sites and then, purchasing the lists of numbers to view them?

And wouldn't that constitute the same criminal activity they claim to be protecting you from?

I don't have enough experience to fully know how this works.

That's right, if we assume a hacker gained access to a database and is selling it off. In some cases, databases or parts thereof leak into the open. Some companies collect these leaks and allow you to check whether your account info was included in some of those leaks, see mynewaccountagain's post for three such companies.

And wouldn't that constitute the same criminal activity they claim to be protecting you from?

I'm not sure what you mean by this.

Thanks

As far as I know, and I could be wrong, the way the sales of socials happens is that a list is bid on and the winner gets to see the numbers after purchase. I don't believe that they bid on a viewable list, because what would be the point of buying information that you already have access to. So the only way they could find out if your social is being traded online is by purchasing a list?

Hopefully that helps, I'm not the greatest explainer.

The database was compromised quite awhile back, and afaik freely available.

It is bullshit, because the entire social security administration database was leaked a long time ago already.

Any source on that? That would be good info to spread around.

Experian are a credit checking agency. They're the ones that probably leaked it in the first place. It's like the internet version of a protection racket... "Cough up goy, or we might have us a little database accident".

Meh, the "leaking" they did probably only totaled a single days total for the professionals.

Yes, they are a shit company that anyone who wants to participate in financial transactions is required to do business with, but what they did was just a drop in the bucket.

This company outsourced a lot of their software development work to India over the last few years. Seems like these new streetshitting devs have introduced them to some Indian specialities.

Never give money to Experian, ever. They're jewish scumbags with outsourced Pajeet developers.
