I learned how to play the recorder. It wasn't as difficult as I thought and was a good starter before I moved on to the bagpipes.

Whoah, you learned on a recorder instead of the practice chanter? Now I want to learn to play the silly thing!

Every time I try picking up a new instrument, I get all frustrated and figure I should just stick to what I know, and pick the trumpet back up. Which is what I should just do; I was really good at it once... with practice I could still get my chops back.

They're both woodwind instruments bearing eight holes with virtually the same spacing and handling for play. If you can play one, you can quite literally play the other. Yea, a full bagpipe kit is a bit more complex with the hide bag and the drone pipes, but that's why you'd be starting on a practice chanter first.
