Users who want Voat to be better and users who are highlighting negative aspects of the Reddit experience are not necessarily doing so out of knee jerk conservatism or yearning for a romanticized past.

They are perhaps doing so because they have experienced great conversations on the smaller subreddits or competing sites such as Hubski, and they want to see if that ideal of in-depth and meme free conversation can be scaled up to a larger user base through small adjustments and pragmatic changes to the site mechanics.

Righteous. Ignore the segregationists - if it's funny post it in funny. This is funny.

I just believe we should have separate but equal websites with reddit being the inferior shit box for the reposting dumbasses and VOAT be for the superior user. see separate but equal, based on needs.

I would if this subverse had more than 50K subs. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter for now.

This isn't a dank meme. Maybe at one point it would have qualified. It's an image macro. There should be a board called /v/imagemacros. But that's pretty much what advice animals is, except that's a fucking stupid name given that most of them aren't animals giving advice.

Yeah, I agree with OP's sentiment but goddamn it memes are overused. My philosophy has become don't upvoat it unless it is a new image or at the very least a personally altered image.

99.999 % of everything is a variation of what came before.think of the most innovative person you know. Someone like Elon Musk. All of his ideas are are just derivatives. There are not enough Einsteins and Newtons on Voat to make enough original posts. The top page is going to get pretty stale.

I think that the only long-term solution to the problem of over-upvoted low content memes, is to use a decrementing vote counter in the top right, where your number of votes available decreases as you spend them. This way voaters feel that there is a need to exercise more caution when spending votes, and not to spend them unwisely on low content posts.

Suppose we have 2 users and 3 posts:

Post A is an extremely dank meme.

Post B is an informative article about topic X.

Post C is an informative article about topic Y.

User 1 really likes X and upvotes Post B. User 2 really likes Y and upvotes Post C. User 1 and 2 also kind of like Post A, the dank meme, so they upvote that as well.

What is the result?

The result is that the dank meme is pushed to the top of the page, despite the fact that no user on the site actually liked the dank meme the most, and that they all had a different post they cared about more.

How can we prevent this ranking failure?

We can apply a scarcity to votes by capping the maximum votes one can sit on to a multiple of one's comment score, put an explicit decrementing available vote counter in the top right of the interface, and contiually regenerate users supply of available votes at a rate of 5% of their maximum votes per hour.

I'm generally fine with this format, and frankly I love these memes, but I think Reddit got things right by moving these to their own subreddit. People either love or hate these.

What would any online forum be without its tightass curmudgeons that think that the newcomers are running everything?

Edit: running should be ruining, but whatever.

The tightass curmudgeons left because they were tired of seeing that in the other place and wanted to go to a better place.

I really don't think people abandoned reddit because of dank memes.

I think that the vast majority of users are being incredibly thoughtful and are not at all accurately described as "tightass curmudgeons".

There is a subverse dedicated to discussing ideas for improvements to the sites mechanics called /v/ideasforvoat.

This subverse has been open for discussing changes to the site since well before the latest influx of new users.

[–] wagesj45 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

And that's great. We should be improving. But we don't have to bash other users just because they happen to like dank memes. I mean, people are complaining over what's posted in the generic subverses. That's the nature of a generic subverse. My problem isn't that they want intelligent and thoughtful discussion. My problem is that they're bashing on users that are posting less intellectually challenging content in the subverses that are essentially giant melting pots.

I think a bunch of people here need to remember that tons of people only really come to sites like this and "the site that shall not be named" in order to kill some time looking at funny/amusing/interesting things. If these kinds of things don't float your goat-boat than you can unsubscribe from the subs that have the worst offenders. Complaining ain't gonna make it better, and doing nothing but complaining just makes you look like a douche and won't change anything.

Anywho, I love all you guys... even the special ones =D

Eh, not necessarily ex-redditors, but ex-redditors who refuse to talk about anything but reddit on default subverses. It doesn't take months of use to realize that's a pretty surefire way to hinder content quality.
