The truck is a 1996 Mazda B2300, which is the same truck as the Ford Ranger except for different badges and a slightly different interior. It is extended cab with 2 drop down seats in the back. Has individual seats in front, not the bench. The motor is a Ford 4 cylinder 2.3 liter, has the Mazda M5OD manual transmission (Ford used the Mazda tranny in their trucks). Even the rear differential has Ford stamped on it. It is 2wd and has 238k on the clock.

The transmission shifts so smooth it has either been replaced before or is a marvel of modern engineering. If my new Ranger used the same tranny I would have pulled it and kept it as a spare. Clutch doesn't slip. All gears engage no growling or popping or having to hold the lever in place.

I've found that the valve covers sometimes get loose. You can tighten them without removing anything. I check the oil about once a month to make sure it's not low. I've found that I lose 0.5-0.75 quarts between oil changes. I run 10w30 full synthetic and do a 5,000 mile interval. Motor doesn't skip or stutter. It fires right up even in January. Starter is strong, battery is good. Gets about 20 MPG.

I think he took pretty good care of it. When I bought it the first thing I did was drain the transmission and differential fluid. They both came out very clean. I think he must have done it too. I replaced the fluids and made a new diff cover gasket and replaced the crush washer on the tranny drain plug. Neither leak. No coolant leaks. Previous owner did the timing belt about 25k miles ago.

Truck came on 14" wheels with these dinky looking tires. I put on 15" wheels from an XLT Ranger (way more tire choices for 15" wheel) and fresh rubber on all four corners.

Overall a great work truck (I'm in construction myself), beater, or 2nd vehicle for someone who wants the benefits of a truck.

Just a guess...
