To be fair, Chinese people make up 18% of the world population. The next closest Asian population has about a 10th of the population of Chinese people(ignoring Indians).

So it's a useful stereotype.

when I say asian or oriental I'm referring to where these gooks belong I'm not sure of the specifics from there but I'm sure they can find their way home

Dunno if you know this, but oriental is a term that should be used for objects only. Needless to say, I cherish every opportunity to feign ignorance and call them Orientals.

Just imagine how racist it would be to refer to a race with a term that included an equivalent of "western" within it

For the record, "gook" is a racial epithet specifically aimed at the Vietnamese. The racial epithet used for the Chinese is "chink". If you're going to be racist, at least get your epithets straight.

Even Asians have trouble telling other Asians apart.

When I was in school taking a pre-requisite class there was a lot of Asian people in the class, a majority of them were from China. For some class assignment we had to be in groups, I got paired with a group of 3 Vietnamese and 1 (everyone assumed) Chinese.

Anyways, we're discussing our class project and one of the Vietnamese guys asks the Chinese guy "Hey, aren't you Chinese? Why don't you be with the other Chinese groups?" The Chinese guy was shocked and immediately said "I'M NO FUCKING CHINESE! I'M THE SAME AS YOU!"

Akward silence for 5 minutes after that. I didn't say shit, I was the token white boy trying not to laugh out loud.

Yeah, I'm half Japanese so maybe it's different, but Chinese and Koreans, Phillipinos and Vietnamese, Indians and Pakistani are hard for me to tell apart.

Indians and Pakistanis aren't supposed to look different.

I don't know. Koreans have rounder and flatter faces than the Chinese, and Phillipinos are usually way darker that the Vietnamese. Indians and Pakistani, there probably isn't a difference as they used to be the same country.

Common misconception, he is actually trying to call people out on not knowing what nation someone is from based on appearances. Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, ect. are not races.

To be fair, those are also ethnicities.

Yeah, with Chinese essentially meaning Han Chinese (which is the bulk of their population IIRC), those are legit ethnicities.

You're correct, ethnicity and nationality have a lot of overlap. Even the definitions of both words describe belonging to a certain nation, among other possibilities for ethnicity.

Ethnicity - the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition

Nationality - an ethnic group forming a part of one or more political nations

It is a good point. Anyone can tell an Iberian from a Scandinavian.

My wife is (American...like 5th generation) 1/2 Chinese and 1/2 Japanese. Neither she nor her family can tell Asians apart. Monday at work there were 4 Asian women talking (one was off-the-boat Chinese, the others were various mixes) and they ALL said that they can't tell Asians apart, except for SOMETIMES by the way they dress. This person is a shithead.

Interesting, I can often tell even when they're naked (sadly more from porn than real life). Koreans, Thais, Japs, and Chinese all have different facial features/structures. I mean, there's enough overlap that you can't always tell, but there are plenty of cases of it being pretty damn obvious.
