There might still be some use for recording vertical video, but I'd really like to see a forced horizontal setting as a default on phones, with an option to enable vertical for those who need it.

Mabye there could be, like a bigass notice whenever you first start recording.

ATTENTION! YOU ARE HOLDING YOUR PHONE INCORRECTLY FOR VIDEO. PLEASE ROTATE 90o

Just cover up the whole screen with that an don't let it go away until you either rotate the phone or turn off default settings.

No, I see where he's going with it. Make it auto-rotate the display to widescreen; sort of like a mental nudge, reminding you "oh, shit, I'm holding it wrong." Or just force the phone to record widescreen all the time, even if you're holding it upright. You'll see the screen resize on the phone to have black bars on the top/bottom. The lens is the exact same, regardless of what angle you're holding the phone. It's not like it couldn't be done.

I like this idea.

Smartphone manufacturers should just hurry up and build the necessary hardware/software to banish VVS altogether.
