A graph of US teen pregnancy rates, from the previous generation until now:

(It's at the lowest rate in at least 25 years)

LITERALLY HITLER

lol but fo real tho, I would definitely argue that the modern generations have less of a spine than people used to because of increased luxury and technology. go to a city centre and look at how many people are glued to their phone. look at how parents "raise" kids with TV and Ipads. teen preggerz may be down, but that doesnt mean this generation isnt sliding into depravity.

Being in my late 20s with no children in sight I bet my parents would have preferred I knocked a bitch up in high school. Parents feel like their children are obligated to deliver them grandchilden and get all pissy if that's not happening. Is their life not complete unless they have grandchildren?

As someone who's a few years older than you and never wants kids, in my experience it's because many parents think someone choosing not to have kids completely invalidates their life. When your life choices hinge on "because everyone else does it", you're making bad decisions.

Interestingly, teen are also having less sex these days. Which I don't see as a healthy change. I'm just 23, and the way I see my generation has failed to mature is frightening. We need to stop trying to delay adulthood in our young people and focus on equipping them for adulthood as much as possible.

Yes, teens are going to get pregnant. That's their biological imperative at that stage in life, and around 18 years of age is the healthiest time to have a child. If that is a bad thing in your society, that is a problem with your society. I've gone to high schools with daycare facilities open to students and faculty, I'm sure colleges have the same thing. Some high schools and most have programs to help students get and keep their first jobs. And I've lived in rural areas where people support each other because folks still remember what it is supposed to mean to be human. There is no reason why having a kid at a biologically healthy age should be as socially and economically devastating as it is.

It doesn't have to be economically devastating. The bigger factor is the social impact. I had my first at 20 and when she was small people kind of snubbed me because I looked about 15, lived in an old decrepit farmhouse and didn't do much outside of work a little and tend to her. People are expected to have the 3 bedroom, 2 cars, high paying job before they have kids. There's no need. Before a kid hits middle school age they don't give a rats ass where they live. My crappy farmhouse was going to be torn down, I fixed it up nice enough and safe for us for 3 years while I saved for something better. Now she's 15, I'm still quite young looking, full of energy, with a pretty good paying job that is just going to get better while my friends who waited til in their 30s look in their 40s toting around a toddler and still fretting their lives are not good enough. If you can throw a middle finger in the face of people who want to give you shit for whatever social infraction they are bitching about being a young parent isn't bad.

I agree that it should be an available option, but a lot of people aren't very mature at all at that age. I've got a friend who had a kid at 17. He's 20 now and still acts like a 14 year old wannabe gangbanger. On the other hand, I don't think he'll ever really be fit to be a good father. Some people just make terrible parents.

Actually, that's a graph of births. No indication of how many babies are being aborted before they come to term, so you can't use it to draw any conclusions about how many teens are getting pregnant.

You're right, the graph does show births rather than pregnancies. There are other graphs elsewhere that show the abortion rate too that you can use to correct for that though. The CDC has wrapped theirs up in an Excel spreadsheet rather than a .jpg, so it's harder to show here. Abortions are apparently falling as well though.

Voat, usually I'm with you on social issues but statistically, promoting abstinence only policies results in the highest rate of teen pregnancy. The best policy is to just be honest and tell 'em to wait but acknowledge that they might not and prepare them to be safe. Now, that might not be what this comic was getting at but it could certainly be interpreted that way.

[–] Sixtysixpixistix 1 points 14 points (+15|-1) ago

No, that's not what this comic was getting at. Promoting abstinence only is a far cry from encouraging sex.

Yeah, strict religious households do have more problems with teenage pregnancy.

How did you get an abstinence only message from this cartoon? The mom encourages a certain culture, which happens to have high pregnancy rates.

[–] ElementalPee 5 points 2 points (+7|-5) ago

It wasn't anything overt and more just a reading between the lines thing. It just seemed to promote a more conservative lifestyle. Also I'm not saying you're wrong but do you actually have numbers on this culture's pregnancy rates? Also what culture is it exactly? I vaguely remember reading something talking about how poor demographics tend to have more babies and potential reasons why that would be but I don't remember if it addressed teenagers.

I think it's a critique of the media and parents that just turn a blind eye to what their kid's doing. Specifically calling out those parents who post their kid on instagram twerking or something.

I like the way the comic suggests that teen pregnancy -- at its lowest rate in 25 years -- somehow starts with a toddler saying "shit".

Never mind teen pregnancy is basically at an all-time low and falling.
