I always make it a point to correct this mistake by immediately reaching down, scratching those floppy ears, and apologizing profusely with a proper belly rub and maybe a treat.

I used to have this big black mutt, sweetest dog I ever knew. We got him when he was about a year old and I was maybe six or seven. He took to sleeping outside my door at night, and I loved him for that loyalty, but he was so darkly hued that if I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, I'd sometimes trip over him in my rush. He was smart though, eventually he started getting up out of the way when he heard the doorknob turning, then he'd go right back to his spot once I was done and back in bed.

I even do it to dogs that aren't mine. I know they don't understand, but I honestly just can't trip over them and not try to make amends for it.

Then they start intentionally dancing around your legs so you trip over them so they get attention. lol

My dogs were smarter than that I guess, they danced, but they made sure to stay out of the way. I mean, they knew they were getting ear scratches and tummy rubs no matter what, even if they were just laying their heads in our laps while we were reading or watching TV.
