Why not Mao? He had a way greater killcount and was more directlly involved killing his own people/government.

Hitler has been used as propaganda by the allied nations ever since world war 2. If they paint him as ultimate evil, then they, by comparison, must be ultimate good for (nearly) killing him.
Stalin, by comparison, was one of the allies, so he kinda gets a pass and a sort of goofy "Uncle Joe" treatment. Mao is irrelevant: The US never fought him. Most westerners don't really know anything about him other than "he was a communist, right? So that means he was all about improving conditions for workers.' There was even a line of cafes serving general east asian food named after him in my city. I genuinely don't think they realised what a shithead he was, but they took down the posters of his face after complaints.

Funny thing is when I lived in China, all of my friends thought he was great for China and made them prosper. Pretty sure they didn't teach them about the cultural revolution or anything like that. Otherwise, what else could you possibly think of that fuck?

Communism gets a lot of shit thanks to Mao. Really they were just more of the same oligarchs operating under a new label than anything actually resembling communism.
