It works quite well as a viewer, but be warned that the editor is destructive (ie it over-writes the original image). It also cannot copy an image to the same directory as the image (it destroys the original before making the copy, leaving you with an invalid image). But this is one step closer to a completely Google-free & modern Android phone (AOSP items tend to not be very up-tp date these days).

I would use this, but the last time I did it had an issue deleting pictures and I lost my whole library diagnosing it. Maybe three weeks ago. I'll keep an eye on it's dev, but it might be early days.

The issue was I would mark a file and delete it, and it would just delete another file. Files were stored on internal storage.
