A subverse for discussing all things related to Free/Libre and Open Source software built for Android.

The primary source of FLOSS for Android is the F-Droid project. A prettier web interface for the F-Droid repository is fossdroid.com.

The name was chosen according to Richard Stallman's statements regarding Free/Libre software and Open Source software; as the purpose of this sub is not to exclude either Open Source or Free/Libre software, FLOSS is used. While discussion about the merits or shortcomings of either Open Source or Free/Libre software is welcome, it is not the main purpose of this subverse.

--Rules--

Pirated content is not FLOSS. Do not post links to pirated content.

Please only post content relating to both Android and FLOSS.

flashing an oppo a73 (flossdroid)

submitted 2 months ago by 475677 to flossdroid (+3|-1)

Do any of you have any idea on how to flash a custom rom to an oppo a73? I bought one to replace a dodgy htc m9+ but it's got this absolutely retarded colorOS bullshit on it and I'm finding it impossible to find information on how to root it or flash it with a decent open source rom to get around the colorOS garbage. I've tried using apex launcher to hide the filth in the meantime but a single press of the home button and it's back to pooinloo programming making it seemingly inescapable.

Before you ask yes I checked xda and the only mentions i can find are for the a73f which I don't have.

OsmAnd (GPLv3)

  • You can use GPS without being interrupted, or being told five times where you need to turn and when you can proceed.

  • It tells you them speed limitz.

  • Free software (except for non-free artwork or whatever, maybe if they presented it in a super-way to the public I would create and commit (of course we want to help!).

  • When you favorite a location, you don't have to worry that the NSA will know about your rendezvous points and strongholds. Just kidding go live under a rock.

  • Map mode can be: day / night / light sensor...

You can search for places like if you're fat just type "wendys" but you just have to spell it correctly, top left search button.

Searching for addresses is a total bitch though. Bottom right arrow thing. And don't try searching for something that's located outside your downloaded map. Either download all of your country, the world, or enable the online maps plugin.

Once you have your necessary places favorited, it's all good. Works like a charm. All this thing needs is all free assets and a little backup option that stores your favorited locations... so you can get it all back when you get a new phone or operating system for example. (I didn't see any backup options yet).

And no, you can't stop the talking cunt in Alphabet's proprietary app.

Archived Can F/LOSS Droid be used with prepaid/WiFi-focused cell services, like Republic Wireless? (flossdroid)

submitted 1.8 years ago by RJKH to flossdroid (+14|-0)

I'm trying to cut costs and switching to a WiFi-focused service makes sense to me, seeing as I don't actually call much and I'm at home a lot of the time. I figured that F/LOSS would be useful in keeping a cheap cell service even cheaper with very precise control of the machine, while giving me something more functional than a dumb phone. How do services like that work with custom roms or even just AOSP?

Archived I think im ready to take the plunge-- which OS should I run? (flossdroid)

submitted 11 months ago by Voopin__Voopin to flossdroid (+5|-0)

I was pretty upset when i saw the news that cyanogenmod was no longer a thing, as that's what I was planning on (eventually) putting on my old android (droid bionic) device.

You can imagine the results I'd get when searching google/DDG something like "which FOSS android OS is best"....

Just looking for some quick opinions on which OS(es) are the best. I dont mind doing my own research, but can someone point me in the right direction?

It has finally come to the point where i've lost so many emails and passwords, that i can't even access google play, to update my VOIP software, because it wont take my new password, and i've already reset the password but that's not it.... see my luck here?

If I can get this shit running on my bionic, and HOPEFULLY get the lapdock working (which i can't find a DAMN thing about online, so i hope it just works), I will be one step closer towards a free android experience.

I know about having to root, but have never done it. Im pretty computer literate (lets say a really good user, but I don't program) so you won't have to explain the most basic terms/concepts to me.

Thanks goats :)

It differs from Google maps in only 2 wasy:

  • carls jr and carl's jr give different results. Use the latter.

  • no location operation time, although it shows up for some places so the feature exists but they're working on it.
