Weird that they would do that considering it's the Official State Animal but as a subspecies how different is it really from the larger grouping, the North American Cougar? Like many subspecies, how different does it need to be to be considered something separate that we need to protect? 1% different (by DNA analysis), 10%, 15%? We may be wasting resources protecting a population that is not any different, genetically, than panthers in Georgia or Alabama.

I agree with the article author that the 3 reasons for giving up on the Florida Panther are stupid. But then, most humans are stupid, so not surprising that "I'm afraid to live near scary things" is on that list.
