Independent at the moment. I have a soon-to-be 3 year old who has had some developmental delays so I cut my business back hardcore and am looking forward to getting back into it in another 2-3 months. Pain in the ass to redevelop a client base, but not anything I haven't done before. :-)
Big box gyms are nice as you don't have to look for clientele and the types of individuals are usually similar so it's not a large brain drain, but I like the fact that independent contracting introduces me to a much wider variety of clientele.

How do you find clients? Craigslist and networking at local gyms?

Word of mouth mainly. I know a ton of people in the fitness business as well and so I have helped them out from time to time. Mainly though it's been from happy clients telling their friends.
Networking at local gyms is a big no-no here and I'm not one to do it surreptitiously. The idea of being underhanded and suggesting to people that they should work with me is really not a good foundation for me.
Craigslist I haven't tried yet. I don't really trust that site so much as people I know have gotten robbed buying things on that site. I prefer to keep to word of mouth for now, but considering when I come back to full time to put a year or two in at a gym to build up a bigger reputation that I can build from there a nice client base long term.
