I started going to the gym for the first time 3 days ago. How long are you "supposed" to rest between sets?
(Not really a pre-resolutioner, this is something I've been putting off for a long time and I just happened to start now due to outside circumstances.)
Welcome! Keep going, once you get past the first month it becomes routine and it'll be hard to miss a day. Resting depends on your goals or the workout. I generally rest for 30 seconds to a minute to keep my heart rate up but powerlifting can go as high as 2-4 minutes. These people are most decidedly not powrrlifting and taking 5-10 minutes between sets.
Wait a minute, isn't a set a select number of repetitions of a certain exercise? For example, doing 10 pushups in a row, counts as one set?
I'm confused because I did as many repetitions as I could and then I rested, did repetitions etc. But I never rested more than a minute. How can one need 2-4 minutes between every set? Was I not pushing myself hard enough, and therefore I didn't need to rest as much?

In general, I'd say around 2-4 minutes. It does depend on what you're doing, but it shouldn't be a long time.
