First, good for you for making a positive change in your life! It's difficult to take control of your life when there are so many things these days that promote and even reward laziness (but only in the short term).
As for people being slightly hostile, I have bad news: this is probably the new norm. It's weird how some people think that an improvement in your health is somehow an insult to them, or that you have taken away their ability to improve. Success is not a finite resource, but it has to be earned.
