7.62 NATO 147 Grain Ball ammo out of a M1A 22 inch barrel is 2750 fps, out of a 16.5 inch barrel is 2690. Of course with custom loading you can do better than this. In my experience the large 7.62 mm rifles (.30/06 and the 7.62X51) perform a lot better with a 160 to 180 grain projectile. Match bullets for both these calibers are the 165 grain Serria Game King, Speer 165 grain Grand Slam, and the Hornady 168 grain AMAX Polymer tip. For Heavier Game (Elk, Moose) you should move up to the 180 grain high performance projectiles. For large and Dangerous game like Brown Bear YOU NEED TO BE SHOOTING A 220 GRAIN PROJECTILE. (In my opinion Any one who goes after Brown or Grizzly with a .308 diameter cartridge needs to have his life insurance policy up to date.) Hell I have come to the conclusion that For super large/dangerous game the minimum caliber is a .338 mag.
