Interesting idea putting a mother in an IPA. Lots of food for the mother to feed on. Do you order your mothers or do you grow them? I recently had my first decent sized mother come out of a red wine vinegar mix.

I was given this mother, it fed on apple cider before this. A new mother forms on top of the liquid after a few days if the old one is removed. Since this pic was taken the thick mat has sunk and a thin new skin has formed on the surface.

Huh, I didn't realize breeding new mothers could be so fast. I generally just let old bottles sift to the back of the cabinet to see what happens. I guess I should look stuff like this up sometime.

It's starting to smell interesting. Faintly vinegary but with a beer and muted hop overtone. I smell it every day.
