Seriously, a child isn't going to notice if you gain a few pounds, you really have to pack it on before they pick up on it.

I've tried this - weighed myself at the beginning & end of workouts (going from hydrated to dehydrated - figuring weight loss from calories burned is probably negligible in that time).

The most I was able to lose in one shot was about 3 pounds. NOT enough to make any visible difference - not even close.

There's a formal term for fluctuating more than that: Denial

Not quite. The body can fluctuate ~7lbs in water weight. You'll feel it yourself, but you aren't likely to have anyone notice an appreciable difference in your appearance from that.
