I have an obese mother, I know all about fad diets. She's tried everything to lose weight, except counting calories. She's even tried stop eating, but it didn't work because she kept drinking 12 beer cans every day.

why do they start all these super expensive fad diets and invest so much energy in it instead of simply counting your calories and then go to expert mode: hitting the macros?

i will never understand this

There are several reasons: failed diets reinforce the idea that their obesity is genetic; they want to have their efforts validated; they might even believe that one diet will finally work.

But the truth is that they don't want to eat less. Or, in my mother's case, she doesn't want to drink any less. In fact, in the week prior to her first lipo, she pigged out so much she gained 5kg (11lbs) in just EIGHT DAYS and the surgeon had to reduce the amount of fat to be removed (subtle weight gain increases significantly the risk of the surgery). She ended up measly 2kg (4.5lbs) less fat, when she could have lost 10kg (22lbs) easily.

Of course, she's already got all the weight back and then some.
