every time I've seen someone make a successful lifestyle change (for weight loss) they've dieted hard as shit and then reintroduced "unhealthy" foods having learned a hard lesson about moderation.

Wrong way to do it IMO. The trick is to simply run a small deficit so that you lose about 1-2 pounds a week. Do that, and you can eat whatever you want, and when you're done, taper back up to maintenance level and coast. This isn't just me talking. It's pretty much the bog standard medically advised way to lose weight and keep it off.
