Praying for victims of tragedies like this is entirely self-serving. It makes the person praying feel better, and nothing else. It has no real effect on other people. Do it or don't, I'm not going to know the difference.
Obesity negatively impacts everything in our world.
It's weird that this is where Slate draws the line.

Prayer harms nobody. And telling someone they're in your thoughts and prayers isn't insulting. IMO, it's another way of expressing how that person is on your mind and that you genuinely hope things improve. For those who believe in the power of prayer, hearing that someone is praying for you is an encouragement.
Obesity, on the other hand, affects all of us. An obese person is harming themselves, draining society of its resources, takes far more space than necessary, and can have a profound effect on the loved ones and caregivers forced to watch them eat themselves to disease and death.
You choose to be fat, just like you choose to offer kind words and prayers. Difference is, your choice to pray harms nobody, but your decision to become fat hurts us all.
Fatshaming, therefore, is completely acceptable. Prayer shaming is bullying.

Prayer harms everybody. What the fuck are you talking about? Dipshits who believe in prayer are much less inclined to feel inspired to take any direct action in the world, as some invisible fucking man in the sky will magically fix everything. Prayer trivializes the role of direct human intervention by ceding power and authority to divine intervention. But, experience tells us that prayer never fucking works and that only through taking full responsibility of our actions is anything meaningful ever accomplished. Prayer fosters passivity.

I believe in the power of prayer. BUT I also believe that God wants us to take action as well. Prayer is just one part of making a difference, and means nothing if you don't act on your good intentions if you're able to.
If it's in your control, you don't stop at prayer. You also go out and help whenever you can. Action is better than intention. But if action isn't within your power, then all you can do is pray, if you believe in the power of it.
For me, it's better than feeling like I'm doing nothing when a situation or outcome is completely out of my hands (or I'm doing all I can and feel even that isn't enough).

prayer shaming doesn't exist. neither does fat shaming.

I'm pretty sure we shame fat constantly.

I like how all the comments keep us on point with the purpose of this sub.

Did everyone just finally get around to watching Jesslnick's special on Netflix?

Be careful with this topic, it could easily fall into a violation of rule 3. Remember, we are here to hate FAT PEOPLE, not religion.

I just threw this hear because Slate's defended Obeast fee-fees in the past, but now they are being HIPPOcrits by shaming people for acting out of their conscience. People have a right to make their own moral decisions. Obeasts get nothing but beetus, hate, and amputation.

It's not necessarily the post itself, but the comment trend. As you can see, I already have a balance of one up and down for even suggesting that bashing religion is a ban-able offence here.
That being said, though it's probably blown over by now @Achtung_Shitlord we may need to keep an eye out for damage control. You're just the first mod I've notice that is recently active.
