People deal with trauma differently. Both of my sets of grandparents were born just as The Great Depression (American) was starting. They were fanatical about not wasting food throughout their lifetimes. They were also big on having one reasonable serving at every meal and dealing with it if you were a bit hungry later. Thanksgiving being the one-time exception each year. Seconds were allowed for anyone who wanted them. (Even thirds because my grandma could cook).

That's probably the best way to do it, healthwise. My grandparents on the other side are British and grew up during the war, and they are fit as hell.

Well, honestly, personal health wasn't even a consideration. Not to dump on your comment, but I never got the feeling that health ever came into it. They were more concerned that it happened once when we never thought it could, so you just never, ever wasted food. That said, they also walked to as many places they could. The older generations had a lot of things right. They would be disgusted at the sight of so many obese 20 somethings we have today. I know I am. My grandmother would be horrified at the sight of an obese child and she would not be able to contain her inner Shitmadam.

Edit: good on your grandfolks, I got caught up in my response and forgot to include that.
