We both have decent jobs, but the answer (which you expect) is a rich daddy. I have school loans, he flies around the world. I struggled to live, he was gifted an island (that's not a joke).

why does someone who has a job and rich parents have a roommate?! that's not me poking holes in your story, i just can't imagine why. the second i started making enough to afford to live in a shoebox without a roommate i never looked back.

I've never considered his view before. To be honest, I have no clue why he does. He seems very focused on an overall sum of money and that may be the reason. You are correct, he has no reason for this arrangement. Now I'm curious.

I'm 31 and I just moved in with a roommate because living alone was not good for me, and making it very easy to hide my alcoholism. I was getting really weird, living like a complete slob, my mood was shit all the time, and then when my liver started failing I had a bit of a breakdown, and decided that if I wanted to turn my life back around I had to have a roommate. The extra $400 a month is nice (plus the extra $750 I'm not spending on alcohol) but having a roommate in my 30s does feel like a step back in life.

I've had to fight to earn everything in this life, and I'm better for it. I strive to teach my children independence and rational thought.
