You were correct. Margarine isn't for dipping. Why would anyone put it on a potato is beyond me - some butter or olive oil would work much better as they would actually give some taste to the potato. Margarine is too neutral.
Also, butter does not come in sticks in every part of the world. Where I live, sunflower oil is the default fat used for cooking. Butter and margarine are mostly used as spreads and for cakes.

Olive oil is the best and tastes better than butter. I think olive oil is the better substitute than butter and butter is only best for desserts. But that would mean the end of salted butter but if that's what attracts fats, so be it.
