Yes and no....type 2 has a large genetic component, but obesity is a huge risk factor, so if you're already genetically predisposed to type 2 being overweight drastically increases your chances of having it. Other risk factors are age (being over 40) and ethnicity. That's why only about 30% of obese people are diabetic and about 15% of type 2s are a healthy weight. Everyone knows that type 1 isn't caused by lifestyle, but a lot of people don't know that type 2 isn't always "self-inflicted" even though it is often the case.

Thanks for reading! I forgot to add that the cause of type 1 diabetes is still unknown. It occurs when the body destroys its own insulin-producing cells, but they aren't sure if there is a genetic component. One theory is that the autoimmune response is triggered by environmental factors, such as viruses. I've seen type 1 occur both in families and in groups of friends with no familial relation. Unfortunately, type 1s are such a small percentage of all diabetics that we don't get enough attention when it comes to research, at least in my opinion.
