They think "hey if I can lose X lbs a week by slightly restricting my caloric intake, I can lose 10x that amount by cutting out 10x more calories!" So they go way low thinking they'll only have to diet for a week or so, and when that doesn't work, they give up and claim dieting doesn't work at all.
