I just don't understand this brown fat/yellow fat thing. Is this a new concept? Because I thought I had heard of it all. Is it true? Google isn't really helping me here, and I trust you guys. I just find it hard to believe there is such a good type of body fat to have.

It's true, it's a fairly rare tissue type in temperate climates, babies are born with a fair amount of it but usually lose it quite quickly as they never need it.

Again, you grow it back just by being cold, when someone says they don't feel the cold, they probably just have more of that than average.

Beige fat is kinda the middle ground, having it isn't perfect, but it's better than yellow fat. They're both referred to as cellulite so it's brown cellulite and yellow/white cellulite (depending on convention, both mean the same but yellow is used more).

Thank you very much for such an informative answer. This is pretty fascinating to learn. I even have a bit of a medical background (sort of... I mean I went to school as a Nursing Unit Clerk in Canada, which requires a 9 month course that goes over the human body and medical procedures, definitely not as difficult as most jobs in the medical field) and I still had never heard of it. TIL!

The adipose tissues are totally different from each other on a cellular level. White fat cells contain one large drop off fat each. Brown fat cells contain multiple fat droplets and a lot of mitochondria. You can se the difference in the image below.

They se also derived from different tissues, white fat is related to connective tissue and brown fat is related to muscle tissue.

As @googlygoink said, their jobs are different brown fat makes heat while white fat stores fat. So white fat just grow and grow and store more and more fat. Brown fat is burning fat and keeping us warm.

It's worth to mention that grown ups only have really small amounts of brown fat, and the tissue doesn't grow so it won't crush our organs.
