Americans are also losing ground in height. For most of two centuries, until 60 years ago, the U.S. population was the tallest in the world. Now the average American man is three inches shorter than the Dutch man, who averages six feet. Japanese averages are also gaining on Americans'. Anthropologists tie these recent changes primarily to diet and lifestyle, as we've turned habitable wilderness into excess.

So weight is based on culture and genetics, but height is a result of diet and lifestyle!?!?

i bet it's because all the hispanics that move here. they are the biggest immigrators, baby havers, and in general, more short.

I can't disagree with that. I do think short people mixing genetics will create shorter people, but I'm not a geneticist myself. If we're also basing Americans on anyone in America, then yup, Hispanics will definitely skew the height factor as well, being as they're shorter.

This article is full of incorrect data. Obviously weight is diet and lifestyle. There is also a huge diet component to height while you're growing (between 4-23ish). If you're malnourished on McBeetus you're not going to be as tall as you would have been had you been fed well. There is a genetic component to height too, but nutrition while growing is also important.

Yes, your adult height is mostly a result of your genetics and nutrition in childhood. Guess how many fatties are going to come to that conclusion based on this article.

[Here's a hint, it's zero]

Yup. I was supposed to be 6'1" but I started smoking at 15, and drinking at 16, and I ate McBeetus every day for my last two years of high school. I am 5'10". BUT, I am totally cool with that because I am girl. Also, not fat. McBeetus was cheap and I was hungry. I would get their special Tuesday 35 cent burgers or I would go to the smarmy coffee shop next door and get a 1 dollar baguette with extra butter.

As I recall, fat stores hormones and thus obese children mature more early, which in turn means they do not grow as much. The evolutionary theory is that it's ok to mature and reproduce if there are adequate food supplies. Conversely, very thin children often mature very late.

I don't remember where I read this so it's entirely possible I'm making shit up, but it seems plausible.
