Can you explain what a DDOS attack is?

I'm not an expert. I believe the principle of it is thousands of bots try to access the site at the same time. All of their requests overload the servers which makes them unable to process all the requests. The result is the site is unusable because each site's servers are sized to handle a certain maximum of requests. Malicious people pay organisations to create these bot invasion attacks when they want a site to go down. The Privilege Checker that you see is a way for Voat to make sure that what is trying to access the site is a person and not a bot. Someone should add or correct me if I'm off the mark.

@Runway22L, it was a bot attack. Voat was getting up to 1 million requests a minute. Putt had to shut things down for awhile.

We regrouped on preview voat, Putt jumped into chat and let us know what was going on.

Yes Cars, you are correct, that is exactly what the privilege check is.

Edit; this isn't a failsafe, and it can be very buggy. But it's something.

Thank you very much for that info. What a pain in the ass. They won't silence us.

Pretty much correct, except they don’t need to pay organizations to do it. DDOS software is free and readily available for anyone to use.
