I recently started working for a small business. The engineering department is two people, me and another human engineer. We were hired within a month of each other. Supposedly there were a lot of openings at this company because it moved locations and many employees couldn’t make the commute to the new place; I suspected that the owner made the move to force out the terrible previous engineers and also to move us closer to our manufacturing facility. I’m now thinking that my boss is just a fat retard who moved the office near his house because he’s lazy and hates commuting, and didn’t actually think through consequences. I need to rant, and my fellow engineer is away on a project doomed by our boss’ incompetence and shortsightedness, so is a short list of his fat fuck insanity:
-
He’s at least 350 lbs right now, and has been ~on a diet~ since January. He’s lost a grand total of 17 lbs since then. He goes to the gym every morning but stuffs his fat face at every opportunity and wonders why he’s not losing more weight. He looooves business lunches and sucks down huge amounts of food with, of course, a Diet Coke. He also chews with his mouth open. It’s so vile.
-
He gets cranky to the point of throwing actual screaming tantrums if he hasn’t eaten recently. He met with an interviewee a few weeks ago and it bumped his lunch hour back by 40 min. The guy didn’t get hired and my boss trash talked the guy the rest of the day to us. We can’t schedule any meetings between 11:30 and 1:30 so he can be sure he gets his lunch in.
-
He doesn’t understand planning ahead, or the concept of work vs rework. Like all fats he wants instant gratification, so he does everything on the spur of the moment and shouts at people to try and get them moving. For example, I’m holding off on authorizing an assembly to be built because we don’t have all the parts made. This stupid whale has been yelling every day this week to try and get me to “just start building” - which we cannot do because we don’t have the fucking baseplate ready. If I were to cave like his former engineers, we’d spend a week assembling this with random bits of stuff around the shop, then cutting the assembly apart so it could be re-welded with the proper parts (that is, if he didn’t say to “just make it work” and completely ignore the design, then be shocked when it failed down the line.)
-
On a similar note, he refuses to understand that design changes take lots of time, especially if you change something fundamental to the design. I’m on week three of figuring out the wiring for one product because he keeps changing where he wants the power input and the distribution points. This rant was prompted by him calling me ten minutes ago telling me I needed to have models and drawings for the latest configuration done in an hour from right now - no fucking chance, when he changed everything around yesterday afternoon.
-
He either cannot or will not control his emotions. Everything is dramatic, every setback is a crisis (and there are many, because he doesn’t plan and is the type to throw out a date for a client as a placeholder, then act as if that self-imposed date is written in stone rather than waiting to estimate a real timeline, telling he customer the date is tentative, or telling the customer that we need to revise the date for X reason). He is also terrified of conflict and being the bad guy, so if there’s any conflict that won’t be him yelling at someone for (in his mind) screwing up, he will lie to someone to get them to break whatever bad news needs to be broken. The other engineer and I usually get put in this position. We’re trying to minimize these occurrences, but he will purposefully leave out information so we won’t know we’re going in to give news or ask a question that will piss someone off.
-
He’s terrible at communicating. With his dramatics, he’ll just waltz into our office, declare that something has gone terribly wrong, then go back to his office and shut the door and get on a phone call before we can get him to explain anything about what has gone wrong and what needs to be fixed. He shoots down our ideas if they don’t line up with what’s in his head, but he’ll withhold information about issues that would help to solve them so we usually need to go several rounds of suggestion-shootdown-“ok but why”-‘extra info that would’ve been helpful’ before we can solve any of the many, MANY problems this man has.
Basically he’s childish, impulsive, selfish, likes to pick on certain employees (pretty sure he’s scared of me; he hasn’t yelled at me nearly as much as he does at everyone else), and all-around infuriating. So, your typical fat. And I’m back on the job search because this is fucking ridiculous and I’m not putting up with it. There’s a lot more but I have to produce something in 40 minutes, so he can make last minute changes to that too, so I ought to get started.

Im in a similar sort of workplace. The fatfuck owner thinks that all of his woes concerning workflow can be solved by buying yet another Mazak, shutting down second shift (my shift), or hiring more dropouts. Luckily for me, Im just a welder, but I can see how the entire management and engineering has to work around his antics.
We had, for example, a run of 300 stainless shaft thingies with blind hokes that were cut one entire degree out of spec, and hes just like "ham, fill these in" while disregarding everybody telling him that it wont work. Lo, and behold, the best i could do still resulted in a 15 thou runout.... I dont remember how much wasted money that represented but it was a shitload.

Oh Jesus lol. Yeah, my boss is he same - throw money at things, don’t listen to anyone, and be shocked when shit doesn’t work.
