I had to look that up. Gene Autry wasn't the composer, but he made it popular. Apparently it was composed and published in 1939 but it wasn't recorded until 1949. It was a huge hit for Autry. He later purchased local Los Angeles television station KTLA, which was notable for its conservative perspective. (I'm aware of this from personal experience growing up in Southern California.) There are still places and landmarks around LA named after him. I've got nothing but great respect for him as a self-made man.
