Type 1 diabetes is usually caused by an autoimmune disorder. Having it somewhere in the family means that you're at a slightly higher risk than the general public, but not by much. Doctors still don't know the inheritance pattern for it or what genes are responsible. They still haven't even figured out how autoimmune disorders work. (I've studied immunology and genetics. It's an absolute nightmare.) Even with a full set of genes that put someone at a higher risk, there's still no guarantee they'll get type 1 diabetes, and at the same time there are people without the genes that will still develop it.
The only thing for certain is that type 1 isn't the individual's fault. That one just kind of happens.

Oh man. I used to work with this huge fat lady. She has the Beetus. She INSISTS it's Type 1 though, even though she only acquired it like a year ago... I kept telling her that it was impossible, she had to be type 2. Bitch was constantly eating and I would say took 4-6 shots in an 8 hour period. It blew my mind. Please tell me I'm right and that she's a filthy fucking liar who won't admit she gave it to herself from being a greedy eatbeast.

Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in childhood for about 75% of cases. The other 25% are as adults, but usually young adults (late teens, early twenties). Type 1 is caused by destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas, which is usually caused by an autoimmune disorder. Although it's rare, there is a condition called LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) that's responsible for a very tiny percentage of cases of type 1 appearing in adults at later ages. This particular type has a somewhat slow onset and actually looks more like type 2 before type1 since it takes awhile for the beta cells to be entirely destroyed and they're not completely dependent on insulin at first. The older they get, the less likely LADA becomes. But as I said, this is rare to begin with and she's probably lying through her porky mouth.
Most type 1 diabetics are closer to average weight, but it is possible to become insanely fat as a type 1 if the dumbass abuses their insulin so they can eat like pigs. This is where things get really bad. Obesity results in insulin resistance, which is a characteristic of type 2 diabetes. Type 1s simply don't make insulin, so adding it back in is just correcting a simple deficiency. Type 2s have fucked over their bodies so that the cells can't properly use insulin anymore, so even ramping up the levels isn't going to help after awhile. If a type 1 gets really fat, they run the risk of developing type 2 as well, which just proves that stupid fuckers are everywhere and some people just can't be helped.
TLDR: If she's over 30 years old, the odds against it being type 1 are as astronomically huge as this bloat beast's ass.

My aunt had it, my brother had it, and now my son does. There's definitely a trend in my family. :)

Wow. It's really unusual for it to crop up that often in a family. If you ever see a genetic study on it being done, all of you should submit for testing. It's anonymous and they may even pay you for it. Not to mention that you'd be helping them uncover the cause of type 1.
