True, but I have to advocate for my skinny, diabetic son. And for myself, since I don't want anyone thinking I "gave" him diabetes (other than my shitty genes).

Type 1 diabetes is usually caused by an autoimmune disorder. Having it somewhere in the family means that you're at a slightly higher risk than the general public, but not by much. Doctors still don't know the inheritance pattern for it or what genes are responsible. They still haven't even figured out how autoimmune disorders work. (I've studied immunology and genetics. It's an absolute nightmare.) Even with a full set of genes that put someone at a higher risk, there's still no guarantee they'll get type 1 diabetes, and at the same time there are people without the genes that will still develop it.
The only thing for certain is that type 1 isn't the individual's fault. That one just kind of happens.
