The type of weapon doesn't matter so much as the ammunition you use. The stereotypical "SWAT weapon" (at least according to TV/movies) is the MP5 or similar variant, which fires a 9mm round, same as many handguns.

There are many types of ammunition designed for self-defense or home defense. You will never be able to eliminate the risk of overpenetration (after all, if it hits hard enough to break skin, muscle and bones, it can and will do the same to drywall), but you can reduce the possibility greatly.

My defensive ammo of choice is the Hornady Critical Defense line. If you're new to the notion of firearms (or deadly force in general) for self-defense, I highly recommend anything by Massad Ayoob. Many of his lectures and essays are available for free, and the information can literally save you from both dying from an attack or dying in prison.
