I wouldn't say it's Marxist. This mentality late-stage capitalism at it's finest. "As long as I can afford it, who cares?" is what this is all about. Sure, there are government programs in place that allow poor individuals to get fat, but that's just state-funded capitalism. Consumerism has lead us here and will be our downfall unless the population as a whole can start to show some restraint.

Japan has a similar food environment with advertising but their standards have not been slowly chipped away like the west.

Not an expert of Japanese culture or anything, but I don't think Japan has been affected by the excess of Western capitalism in quite the same fashion. It may be consumerism, but tempered with the importance of self-control that is common among Asian cultures. The West has no qualms with over-consumption.
