I emphasize this to my kids al lthe time. I come home from a run and eat fruit, pretzels, graham crackers, etc. This is usually around 4-5pm - about an hour before dinner. They naturally want what I'm having and I remind them: "I just ran a bunch of miles. How many miles have you run today?" I remind them that food is a tool foremost, not a hobby. I like dessert, sure. But I only ever eat dessert when I am still hungry after dinner, which happens sometimes to me on long run days. I make sure to frequently reject dessert in front of them. Sometimes I say, "I want some ice cream, but I haven't really done enough today to deserve ice cream." I try not to moralize specific foods in front of them. I just want to teach them that you need to earn every calorie you eat or else you become a fat ass.
