Do you not understand how marriage works? The actual ceremony is meaningless in the eyes of the law, what matters is the paperwork that is signed afterwards or before (in this case after obviously) to become legally married, which is what the guy you responded to was getting at. I have only been to one wedding where the paperwork was signed in front of the guests, and that was a very small secular wedding between people who had been living together for 20 years. The guy could go through all of this and then just refuse to sign the paperwork later, when no one is around.
