Speaking as a firefighter, it's not that bad. We still get to do a lot of the good stuff. But I shudder every time I hear a call come in "to assist the ambulance." Occasionally that means a normal person is trapped, but the majority of the time it means there's a whale that the (often fat) EMTs can't lift. They always smell and they always squeal when we inevitably bump them into things try to get them out of the house. Sorry, ham ball, maybe if you weren't the size of an actual planet you would fit down the hall in your house...
Once we got called to help a fattie who had just been at the hospital get back into his house. Our shitlord captain told them it wasn't our job and we got back in the truck and drove off. That was a great day.
