Um, excuse you, but I'm in starvation mode right now, shitlord. I ate dinner around 6:30pm, and now it's 4:40am, and I'm standing on the scale, and through my tears, I can see that I am 4lbs heavier than I was yesterday morning. Can you explain that? Because I can: starvation mode! My body is literally putting on fat because I have gone an extremely long time without nourishing it. This is real, not a flow chart. Checkmate.

and their body has responded by holding on to all of their fat stores or potentially even causing them to gain additional fat

… all despite being in a caloric deficit? It doesn't work that way fatty.

Yeah, the only doctor who's research supports the possibility of weight gain without eating is named Banner.

the problem is that they lack willpower.

i think this starvation mode they are talking about is where the brain goes "hey, we had a lot of energy stores before and ample food supply why did we stop? EAT MORE THERES A FAMINE COMING ITS NEARLY WINTER!!!!!!!!!!!"

of course this was great as it motivated thinner humans in the past to seek out food for when winter does hit and barely any food is around. however now that we have this thing called stores its a non issue. evolution hasnt caught up yet to get rid of that function of the brain.

so how do we get around this? willpower to ignore the signals or the best part is to never get that fat in the first place. it is a lot easier to stay thin than it is to get fat then lose weight but that is not an excuse to not try or even why you cant succeed.

Starvation mode is a real phenomenon in biochemical pathways, where after not eating for something like 2-3 weeks your body switches from mostly glucose to mostly keto-acids. Where they got that you would just store any eaten glucose into fat makes very little sense as your body would much rather utilize glucose as a cleaner fuel and not breaking down muscle.

As far as I know, starvation does not set in after a fixed time, but when your fat storages runs so low that the body switches to burning relevant amounts of muscle and essential body fat (for example the fat around the kidney). So yeah, starvation mode is real, when your BMI drops, but usually not with any BMI > 18.
