I think socialized everything can work given two-unlikely-to-ever-happen-in-my-lifetime things. 1) There are high but reasonable expectations for receiving benefits and 2) there is no systematic corruption (aka food stamps being used for whatever people lobby for instead of what food people should be eating.)

Both things would impact any system in place, but they probably create the greatest societal burden in a "socialized everything" system.
