Technically, the study was headed in the right direction but identified the wrong vector. LAZINESS is contagious, and people who are lazy tend to let themselves go. This is how a skinny person hanging out with fats becomes fat themselves. The human brain will adapt to its environments, and it slobs do nothing but eat all day, you too, will do the same.

Fats are like vampires. They try to turn you. You have to be on your guard. They push food on you at mealtimes, load food with fat/sugar, deliberately fail to have reasonable options available at mealtimes, deliberately slow you down during activities.

That is correct. People tend to adapt behaviour from their surroundings, they are very social creatures after all. But those who do, have to have some predisposition to the said behaviour, it is almost like they seek the validation to just let go... For example, you can take a look at a drug addicts. When someone observe, that this behaviour is acceptable, he/she just "go with a flow". It is a sign of a weak mind, a conformist.

This is the true value of fat shaming. Hams like to complain that it doesn't help people lose weight and that is fairly true. It is certainly not 100% effective because people are so weak that they don't respond. What it does do is create social pressure and prevents people getting fat in the first place. The human desire to fit in with the crowd takes care of the rest. These days it almost makes you a special person to resist all that social pressure to be obese.

There's a word for that. It's called standards. This is why Japan remains one of the fittest countries even though it has the same modern and commercialized food environment. It's not because of their Asian guh-netics because Asians are much more susceptible to "metabolic syndrome" than westerners are so if anything, their genetics would work against them.

This is why people have to keep being told that it's shit to be fat, not the opposite. I have three roommates and they are all fat but I have maintained my weight through last semester and the few weeks of this one. Seeing them look so terrible and keep the air freezing all day because they are so fat keeps me motivated to not eat over my TDEE and to maintain my weight.
