No massive oil reserves in Sweden or Denmark.

That said, the reason Democratic socialism works is exactly the same reason basic income looks good in Finland. When instituted, it still benefits from the current culture and previous free market, where being a welfare bum is seen as something very negative and people (men in particular) would literally go homeless before accepting handouts.

However this attitude fades away over time, and now the system is filled with invaders that never cared, or natives that are so alienated they feel justified in abusing the system. The same is true for basic income. Sure, in a high quality country where the culture and people will still expect and fight to get a job it will work fine for a while. But after a few decades sneaky marxists will start complaining about how "workers" have much better lives than basic incommers, and a growing class of basic incommers will never work, and never try to get one, so what do they care if taxes on someone else goes up?

The immigration problem is another huge issue that will accrue with a basic income. Why? Because if your country is halfway decent, there is at least 6 billion people who would love to move there. Any politican will instantly realize that it will be a lot easier to import some african and ensure their vote with basic income than actually improve society.
