It does taste sweet, thats why pets will drink it. It's very toxic too, so only a little is required and it damages the liver, kidneys, and brain. Cats are less likely to drink it because they don't have taste buds for sweetness, but as little as a teaspoon can be deadly :(

I'm not sure cats can't taste sweet things. My Maine Coon goes crazy for a taste of cake. Don't get me wrong, I won't feed my cats shit, people food is terrible for them. If he's lucky, he gets a crumb.

Could be something else in the cake he likes (maybe the buttery taste?) but it's generally believed that cats don't have taste receptors for sweetness.

Just make sure not to give your cat anything chocolate - it's even more toxic for cats than it is for dogs!

My cat has a pretty bad Doritos addiction. He will hear a bag and come running and straight take a chip out of your hand. However, we don't keep chips in the house unless we have guests or something so he just pines away. He gets his wet food a few times a week which satisfies his junk food habit.

My dog goes apeshit for popcorn. Whenever she even hears Mr. Ferret pulling out the air popper, she comes running. Thankfully air-popped popcorn is low-cal (as long as it's not slathered in butter and salt) so I don't mind giving her some.
