I met this girl at the apartment complex we used to live at. She was friends with my oldest son. Really nice, sweet kid. She would come over a lot, and she'd talk to me sometimes, and I genuinely liked seeing her. She'd borrow my nail polish, ask me for fashion/makeup/hair advice, general girl stuff. She was 14 or so when I met her and shaped like a teapot.
Over time, I found out that her parents are both HUGE obeasts, both on disability, neither of them are particularly mobile, and apparently pay exactly zero attention to this kid. I was always nice to her since it didn't seem like her parents gave a shit and I felt bad.
Fast forward 2 years, and I've moved away, but she added me on facebook and we chat once in a while. Last night I posted a recipe and she asked me about it, then asked if I had any other healthy recipes because she was trying to lose weight, since she'd just been diagnosed with FUCKING DIABETES. At 16! Of course I told her I have tons of recipes and would gladly share them with her.
Then she tells me she is thinking about weight loss surgery. Wtf?? She's a fucking kid! So I spent about an hour talking to her about it. I told her she doesn't need surgery, and that losing weight is very simple. I offered to help her get started and to teach her how to eat right. She was so grateful and happy! No one has taught her anything about nutrition. Soda, sweet tea, and fast food are pretty much all her parents give her. She's not so fat that she's beyond help, either. I really hope I can help her get herself on track. The idea of a 16 year old having diabetes and wanting weight loss surgery just blows my damn mind.

I hope so. She really seems like she wants to better herself.
