I'm in the process of bringing on a few interns for the spring/summer baby season; I run a home based wildlife rescue and really need some extra help to care for the critters because in season is crazy...sometimes I care for orphans that need to be syringe fed every 20 minutes/ 12 hours a day, sometimes I need to gavage feed 17 baby rabbits, feed all the other patients, clean up after them, answer calls, fill out paper work, yada yada... I'm looking to bring on at least some help with cleaning/feeding...
Well, I called in the 3 most experienced applicants to come in for a group interview (with the intention of offering them positions before I interviewed other applicants with no experience). Two of them (humans) were pre vet students at good schools, great GPAs, both had a decent amount of animal related experience with openness to caring for all animals (not just domestics), and they seemed eager to learn and start.
BUT then.. the third applicant (at least 300lbs on a 5'2 frame) showed up, 15 minutes late with a starbeetus. I explained to "him" that there was no eating or drinking allowed in the animal care area and asked "him" to leave his butter juice in his car or at least leave it outside. My rescue is home based (out of my basement that is completely separate from my house)...but even so, I explained to "him" that I strive for hospital level cleanliness and that it is unacceptable and unhygienic to eat or drink in the care area. "He" wasn't happy and went outside and finished it (taking ~5minutes or so...).
I then started going over the basic duties of the internship, explaining that it would be for at least three-four months/ 20 hours a week with the freedom of scheduling their own times to come in, as long as it was the same time a week and their shift lasted at least four hours at a time. (Which is extremely reasonable for an internship!!). When I asked if there were any questions, the first thing this fucking ham asks is how many breaks do they get, how long are their lunches, and when do they get them. I kindly explained to "him" that, due to the nature of the work, there are no scheduled times for breaks because it can be extremely hectic, but I also said everyone is welcomed to take a few minutes here and there if they need to and they can take a break/lunch when it is not cram time.
And here is where I journeyed into cringe hell.... I asked the applicants about their experience and career goals (normal stuff). The humans explained they needed experience to get into vet school, they wanted to get wildlife experience, and that they loved animals: I was basically confirming their resumes.
Then the beast starts talking... on "his" resume, "he" mentioned that "he" was doing a vet tech program online and had a strong interest in working with wildlife and needed to get non veterinary animal experience for his resume. On "his" cover letter, he mentioned how he has always felt close to nature and especially loved wild canines. Sounds perfect on paper, right? When this thing started talking about his "experience", "he" mentioned he just started the program a week prior to submitting his application and that he feels connected to wildlife because he "is really a wolf". I shit you not..."he" started talking about his fersona and how "he" has always known he wasn't born in the right body. He even asked if he could wear one of his wolf tails (the belt clip ons) when I started to discuss dress code. Beast also states that he would get along well with the foxes and coyotes, but he might have trouble with prey animals. He also asked if we ever work with wolves (absolutely not, there are none in my state...) and that this would mean the world to him "to be around those more like him".
My jaw dropped to the floor, I've heard of this shit via tumblr, but I never expected to encounter it in real life. The human applicants were holding back laughter and I had to end the interview early because I was so....WTF'd out. (I accepted both humans as interns, we all had a good laugh about it on the phone, haha). But...now I'm a little nervous this beast is going to cry discrimination or something. WTF is happening in the world?????
